Scroll back to 1967. That’s when it all started.
Though he didn’t know it at the time, the foundations for our agricultural engineering business were set by Alwyn Houghton in the 1960s. At that time, Alwyn worked for Collier & Co. based in Leicester’s Cattle Market. In 1967, he left to set up on his own, representing tractor and machinery manufacturers, and still based in premises at the Cattle Market. Some 20 years on, the ancient and famous market closed down, displacing the businesses it accommodated.
That was the point at which Alwyn relocated A T Houghton to a new green-field site in Shearsby – the site we still occupy today. While planning consent was somewhat less obstructive than it tends to be today, it was still a stroke of good fortune that the company was granted permission to build.
At first, a small workshop was constructed. Then a much larger workshop as the business built up over the years. And then an expansion to the twin commercial units you see today, along with the addition of our smart shop area and a huge space for stores.
That period of nearly three decades have witnessed many changes, with the range of products we support broadening and the types of agricultural equipment we represent changing, mostly through our own choice but not always: ours is a fiercely competitive market.
Despite the occasional moments of stress, our business strategy has proved very successful. We now represent and support the finest quality equipment from the industry’s leading brands, including Deutz-Fahr, Kverneland and McHale, to name but a few. And we hold over 200,000 machinery and agricultural parts in stock in our impressive store area, so the tools and components we need for equipment servicing and repairs are always to hand.
